Flood Warning alert (27th January, 2021)
Government through the Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) has instituted close monitoring of possible hydrological flooding this 2020/2021 rainfall season. This is aimed at improving the implementation of its early warning system. The close monitoring indicates that there is possible flooding expected to occur in Kasempa, Kabompo, Zambezi, Mufumbwe and Manyinga in Northwestern province, Kafue in Lusaka province, Mazabuka and Chikankata in Southern province, Ngabwe, Mumbwa and Itezhi-tezhi in Central province, Mitete, Lukulu, Luampa, Senanga, Nalolo and Mwandi in Western province, Lufwanyama, Mpongwe, Lufwanyama, Luanshya on the Copperbelt and Milenge and Chembe in Luapula province.
The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) wishes to alert communities within the Kafue Catchment of the possible flooding likely to occur around 7 -9th February 2021. This is based on analysis of flow data across the country that has indicated increased water levels in our rivers compared to the last three years around the same time due to increased rainfall across the country.
DMMU further wishes to alert the communities in the highlighted districts to be on the lookout for the floods and relocate to safer areas to avoid being inconvenienced.
