The Office of the Vice President has launched the Kanakantapa Solar Irrigation Scheme Initiative (KASISI) in Chongwe, a K205 million, 5-year project benefiting 413 smallholder farmers.

The initiative aims to enhance agricultural production, resilience, and market access.

Speaking at the launch, Permanent Secretary for Resettlement Division, Mavis Nkomeshya, said KASISI addresses climate change, enabling year-round farming.

“This project will strengthen drought resilience and preparedness, especially in resettlement schemes,” she said.

The Permanent Secretary highlighted that government plans to irrigate 500 hectares by 2027, scaling up to 1,500 hectares by 2030.

Schweizer Agriculture Limited’s Dr. Joas Chihangu said the project empowers farmers to produce consistently and sustainably.

Meanwhile, Youth beneficiaries Cobby Mwansa and Theresa Chewe praised the project’s impact.

The launch coincided with the SEED Foundation District Excellence Awards.

In related news, Ruth Ngoma has been crowned Ambassador for KASISI Limited, winning K50,000 at the Schweizer Agripreneurship Awards for her work in agribusiness and policy advocacy.

Ms. Nkomeshya congratulated Ruth, saying her recognition highlights the importance of supportive policies empowering agripreneurs.
